The UK has become more flexible in the way that it works. People are no longer tied to the office all week long, as many can now work from home, go freelance or even start their own business and run it from a home office. This new freedom and flexibility is undoubtedly better for our quality of life, but how is it affecting how much we actually get done each day?

Working from home, on your own, can be fantastic if you are the kind of person who is able to motivate themselves and avoid distraction and procrastination. However, some people crave the interaction and socialisation of an office environment and will miss it too much if they go solo, whilst others will find that their motivation and productivity drops the longer they work out of their home office and nowhere else.

Why does motivation in the workplace drop when you are a lone worker? Here are just a few reasons:

  • Endless distractions. There are certain things you can’t ignore at home, from the phone ringing to the dishes to the dog needing to be taken for a walk. These things only take minutes to deal with, but they happen so often that they end up taking big chunks out of your productive working time.
  • You’re the boss. This sounds like every office worker’s dream, but it can actually lead to laziness and procrastination. Unless you’re tough on yourself and set goals and working times, things soon start to slip if there’s no one else cracking the whip.
  • Feeling like a ‘real’ business. There’s a lot to be said for the office environment and how it makes you feel like a professional – it can also improve your sense of self-worth and motivation to a great extent to be around like-minded, similarly driven professional people.

Co-working – a flexible solution

Many people who enjoy the freedom of working from home but feel that they need an injection of professionalism to drive their business forward choose to use co-working spaces. For those who don’t know what co-working is, it is quite simply a fully equipped hub where like-minded freelancers, start-ups and sole traders can work in a professional atmosphere. For a more comprehensive explanation of co-working in a shared workspace, take a look at our previous blog on co-working. You’ll find that with a dedicated office space to use, around others who are working hard, you will be able to concentrate better and be more motivated and productive.

New Call-to-action

It’s a flexible solution, allowing you to pop in for a few hours each day to boost your productivity but still work at home when you want to. Co-working spaces like those at Carrwood Park are set up and ready to go from the minute you walk in, with everything from IT and communications to hospitality and even meeting spaces all set up in advance.

Co-working also offers you:

  • A professional business address – giving your home address to clients does not look very professional, and it can also be a problem from a security point of view
  • Endless networking opportunities – provided you choose the right co-working space (one with people and businesses in similar industries or with the same ethos as you), you can use a shared workspace to connect with people who can help drive your business forward
  • Increased credibility – a link to a professional office space and its facilities can boost your reputation and credibility with clients and customers, from having a professional address to being able to meet them in proper business surroundings (rather than your living room at home).
