If you’re asking yourself would I be better in a co-working space or serviced office, read this post to clarify what’s best for you. As a small business owner, you may well have reached the stage where the disadvantages of working from home outweigh the benefits. At this point, planning the next phase of growth for your business means a move to premises which provide a professional image.

Reviewing what’s best for your current situation needn’t be a headache. To help you make an informed decision, here’s an explanation of both of these opportunities.

What is Co-Working Space?

This is the provision of a desk in an open plan setting alongside people from other companies. If your work often takes you out and about, co-working may be the best option.

For some, the benefits are clear.  According to Terry Horne, MD of Avalon Media Services   “If you’re a sole trader, you don’t feel like a one-man-band, which makes it easier to talk to other businesses and bring clients here. Being in a bigger working environment makes you look more professional.”

  • It’s also suited to freelancers and even employees of larger companies who don’t work close to their head office.  The main points are as follows;

  • Being in an open plan environment has the benefit that you can interact with other like-minded professionals. It can even provide networking opportunities. Contrast this with the isolation you may feel in an enclosed office.

  • Co-working clients in many workspaces receive the same service and ‘add-ons’ as serviced office clients.

  • There will be access to all the utilities needed to function proficiently, including internet access and power points, telephone and messaging services, and receipt of mail.

  • Furthermore, creativity is enhanced by being able to bounce ideas off others around you.

  • Sharing office space has the advantage of reduced overheads for heating, lighting and other utilities. You still receive all the same services provided to a two man office.

  • Look around for a package giving you a permanent desk reserved for your use only or alternatively a hot desk which you can drop into depending on your individual requirements

Who Would Use a Two Man Serviced Office?

The two man serviced office has its place for many small businesses where confidentiality and discretion are of key importance. Having the privacy of four walls and the security of a locked door may be a necessity for some. It remains an alternative for those who follow a more traditional pattern of nine - to – five office based activity, in the company of a colleague.

What You Should Expect to be Included

As a rule of thumb, whichever option you decide upon, certain baseline facilities should be offered.

  • Wifi, power access, telephone and mail services have already been mentioned.

  • A reception service, which provides a level of security.

  • Standard comfort amenities comprising washrooms and a kitchen with tea and coffee provision.

  • Some providers offer an additional benefit of a couple of hours free access to meeting rooms and there should always be the opportunity to hire them out.

What are the Alternatives?

There are a variety of flexible options available to fit in with your current strategy.   Choosing the right office space for your business is explained further in my previous post What’s The Difference Between Co-Working and Virtual Office Space

Co-working, It’s the Future!

You’ll be in good company by opting for this style of open plan working. According to Deskmag, the trend for demand for available co-working desks has shown a year on year growth of 60%+ globally and is set to continue to rise.

I’ll leave you with one final tip; Take future proofing into consideration. As your business needs will change, look for a location which allows you to move to a different offering within the site and keep the same address.
