Cloud technology has dramatically changed the way we all work. Because of this, it’s now easier than ever to run a small business from home, even for businesses with several employees. Remote workers now make up approximately 13% of the UK workforce, but this isn’t necessarily the most effective way to manage your team.

Just because you don’t have to invest in an office space, it doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t. In fact, there are some very important reasons why it may be an excellent idea to sign on the dotted line and rent an office.

Here are five of those key reasons.

1. It can increase productivity

There are many arguments to say that although employees love to have the opportunity to work from home some of the time, it may not be in anyone’s interest for them to do so all of the time. Many employees work better when they are surrounded by their colleagues. If they have a question it can be answered quickly and easily. If they need motivation, their team is right on hand to provide it. If they have a tendency to be distracted by the washing up or TV at home, the office will take them away from all those things!

2. It can create a fantastic work environment

The environment you provide for your employees can have a big impact on the quality of work they provide you with in return. In fact, statistics show that happy employees are 12% more productive at work. Office suites that are designed with creating a positive environment in mind are more likely to produce happy employees who feel inspired and effective. It’s difficult to create this same type of work culture when employees work remotely from home and not from one central base.

3. It can make a big impression on clients

Whatever your business type, your clients will be vital. You’ll want to ensure that your company’s work base makes the right kind of impression on them. This is particularly important if you are working in an industry where you will regularly meet with clients, such as professional services. A professional office space is likely to impress them far more than a coffee shop, public space, or even your kitchen table!

4. It can make your company more visible

It’s not always easy to succeed in business. In order to give your company the best possible chance of being successful, it’s important to ensure you make it as visible as possible. Investing in a professional office is a great way to do this, especially if you choose space in a business centre – they can be great places to network with the like-minded businesses around you. The links you make with these businesses, and the people that they know, can be incredibly valuable.

5. It can foster innovation

Innovation is often considered to be the holy grail of highly profitable companies. Whatever industry you work in, innovation is important as this is what will ensure you stand out from your competitors and continue to grow. It’s worth noting that innovation doesn't usually occur in isolation. The best ideas tend to be developed when people work collaboratively – something that’s far easier to achieve when employees are physically in the same space, perhaps even coming into contact with people from other teams.

As you can see, having a professional office space can do great things for a business of any size. Whilst remote working can be great, it’s still more important than ever to reap the benefits from having a central work base too.
